Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the Kingdom of Sweden were established on 17 January 1947.
From 1970 to 1978, Philippine interests in Sweden were represented by the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Stockholm under Mr. Claes Edward Arfvidson (1970-1972) and Mr. Stig Selander (1972-1978).
On 9 November 1978, Jose E. Stilianapolous, Philippine Ambassador to the United Kingdom, presented his credentials as the non-resident Ambassador to Sweden.
A formal Philippine Embassy presence was established on 14 November 1978 headed by Chargé d’Affaires Rolando Libas.
Along with Sweden, the Embassy’s jurisdiction covered Finland, Norway, Denmark and the three Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
From 1982 to 1986, Ambassador Consuelo Arranz served as the first resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (AEP) to the Kingdom of Sweden. Succeeding resident Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (AEP) to Sweden included: Honorio Cagampan (1986-1991); Luz del Mundo (1991-1993); Rosario G. Manalo (1994-1997); Erlinda F. Basilio (1997-2003); Victoria S. Bataclan (2003-2007).
Ambassador Maria Zeneida Angara Collinson is the current Chief of Mission of the Embassy from 22 May 2007 up to the present. Concurrently, she serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (AEP) to the Republic of Estonia, the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Lithuania. She was also the non-resident Ambassador to Finland from 2007 to 2009 until a Philippine Embassy opened in Helsinki on 12 November 2009. (Jurisdiction over Norway and Denmark had been transferred to the Philippine Embassy in Oslo on 30 April 2007 during the term of Ambassador Victoria S. Bataclan).
The Embassy represents Philippine political, economic, and socio-cultural interests in the countries under its jurisdiction with particular focus on promoting trade and investments, tourism, and active people-to-people exchanges in culture and education.
The Embassy also seeks to serve the needs of Filipino citizens living in Sweden and the Baltic States by providing efficient and effective consular services. It also strives to raise the profile of the Filipino community through various initiatives encouraging empowerment and representation.
